The requirement to conserve the bungalows allowed the architects to create a dramatic project. The concept wrapped the new 8 storey apartment block around a central courtyard with the bungalows as the centrepiece. A dramatic double-volume entry was then cut through the new block, framing the old bungalows for arriving visitors.
This concept of celebrating architectural heritage while at the same time maximising modern commercial needs has won the project the URA's Architectural Heritage Awards in 1996.
